Some universities in the northeast have started online tests for final year students. But GU-affiliated colleges have come up with no such announcements. Given the uncertainty hanging in the air, the protesting students said that either a clear cut policy be framed for final year students regarding exams or they be offered degrees on the basis of internal assessment.
Later, the students in a statement, said the GU registrar HK Nath has informed them that the university would publish a notice in the next few days regarding their appeal. “We have cleared Assam high school TET (Teachers’ Eligibility Test) held on January 19 this year. However, as per the government notification, final year BEd mark sheet is essential to be considered as an eligible candidate for application against the posts of high school teachers. The state education minister has already announced the publication of high school teacher posts by the first week of September. So we need our results at the earliest,” the statement said.
On August 21, the students had requested the GU vice-chancellor, PJ Handique, to conduct the exams and declare the results soon. “We were notified that our exams would start from September 15, 2020. But till date we have not received any notice. However, it came to our notice that students of the same session from other universities have got their results and would naturally have an advantage over us when it came to employment opportunities,” they said.
As per a UGC notification, the university can conduct the exam through offline/online or blended mode. But since many students of GU-affiliated BEd colleges are from remote and rural areas, including teachers in the age group 50-60 years, they demanded that GU holds the BEd exams through assignment based method and declares the results in September itself.
Cotton University (CU) has conducted the final-year undergraduate open book examination online even though the campus is closed.
The undergraduate final-year examinations commenced at CU on August 18 online. By doing so, the leading state university has become one of the very few institutions in NE to conduct the sixth semester examinations of the undergraduate courses, as mandated by the University Grants Commission (UGC).
“The question papers were uploaded on the students’ portal of the university website at the scheduled start time of the examination. Students were required to log into their respective accounts on the portal using their enrolment numbers and passwords to download the question papers,” said a university spokesman. He said a total of three hours- two hours for writing and one hour for IT related work- were allotted for submission of the scanned copies of answer scripts. “The students are required to preserve the answer scripts along with an undertaking and declaration in a sealed envelope which is to be submitted to the varsity once it reopens for students,” the spokesman added. The UGC had mandated on July 6 that the final year examination of undergraduate and postgraduate examinations across universities be conducted before September 30, 2020.
